This is an idea that I've been toying with for the past couple weeks, and I can't seem to decide that's the case. Everyone I've pooled in this thought thinks that nerds have permeated somewhat to the mainstream. I think this is due to a variety of factors including but not limited to:
- MySpace. Websites were not very cool until MySpace came along. Now everyone (and by everyone I mean everyone in the 20-35 age range) and their brother has their own personal site on MySpace. This made the net that much cooler.
- Software development is listed at the #1 job to have in the near future according to Money magazine. I have a feeling this being the case, many more people are becoming interested in technology. Which leads me to my third point.
- Nerds have money. The richest man in the world is one of the world's biggest nerds. Many more nerds are among the top 50. It is said in the Pacific Northwest that Microsoft employees are a great catch amongst single women because they make good money and they'll never leave you.
I wonder, as time moves on, and new levels of nerdship are established, whether or not new terms will be created to define them (us).
