I was first turned on to its many issues by reading the Diamond Age, a novel by Neal Stephenson, who also wrote the popular cyber punk Snow Crash.
While the Diamond Age was somewhat fanciful in its uses, it wasn't that far off. Various governments including the Indian have pledged to invest millions in the so called nano-bots, or small robots designed for warfare.
It's generally a good sign when a government chooses to research an industry for military purposes. The internet is a result of DARPA research (and of course Al Gore). Computers were largely introduced by the military.
With that being said, nanotechnology seems poised to become the next disruptive industry and it will be on my radar. I'll be adding as a portion of my blogging even though by all accounts, it won't become a mainstream product for at least 5 years to come.
I predicted 2006 would be the year of VoIP and that seems to be coming into fruition. 2010 may very well be the year of nanotechnology, although the changes will be much more sweeping than free phone calls.
Here's a great article that summarizes nanotech investing.
